After inspecting the war eagles on the Memorial Bridge pylons, Lee Lawrie returned to New York pleased with the manner in which the work had been carried out. He believed the bridge and pylons would be seen at their best once the surrounding park-development scheme was completed.
The bridge’s commemorative programme carries the vocabulary of war into its architectural details: eagles, helmets, bayonets, artillery, propellers, torpedoes and a U-boat. Together they turn a working crossing into a memorial to service and sacrifice.
