United States Military Academy at West Point

West Point, New York · 1903–1910

From 1903 to 1910, Lee Lawrie worked with Bertram Goodhue on a succession of major buildings for the United States Military Academy at West Point. His contributions ranged from the fireplace shown here to the eagle on Thayer Hall and a broad programme of ornament for the cadet barracks.

The barracks grotesques brought a deliberate streak of humour to the military setting. Conceived as cartoonish figures drawn from the history of military dress, they turn uniform, helmet and armour into compact architectural caricatures.
