Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Lawrie’s sculptural programme for the Louisiana State Capitol brings the state’s working life directly into its architecture. The tower and entrance record the natural resources of Louisiana through figures of oil workers, fishermen, loggers, cane cutters, farmers and cotton pickers.
At the tower, animals including raccoons, mink, crawdads and a row of pelicans extend that natural-resource imagery into the building’s upper reaches.
