Hesper and Phosphor

A Los Angeles Examiner illustration preserves an early design for Hesper, one of the figures associated with the Library’s north façade. Seen beside the finished work, the revision is striking: the later likeness is more stylised, with a sharper, more compressed silhouette and a stronger architectural presence.

The comparison makes the process visible. The preliminary figure carries a fuller, more illustrative character; the finished Hesper is reduced and clarified for its place in stone, where it works with Phosphor and the surrounding sculptural programme rather than as an independent model.
