Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception

Washington, D.C. · c. 1960

Around 1960, Lee Lawrie created the carved Sacred Heart entrance for the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. Professor Tylden Streett of the Maryland College Institute of Art assisted Lawrie in completing the commission.

The entrance combines a central Sacred Heart portal with figural panels and inscriptions drawn from the church’s devotional tradition.
