The flanking pair of reliefs were designed and executed by Lee O. Lawrie about 1930–31. Originally commissioned for the Education Building for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in Capitol Park, Harrisburg, the panels adorned a hand-operated elevator.
The left panel represents Exploration, Literature, Architecture and Drama. The right panel depicts Religion, Physical Labor, Sculpture and Music. In 1990, the Federal Home Loan Bank of San Francisco placed the panels at 600 California.
